A Day In The Life: Carlos, Rulesware Project Manager

carlos

Our Day In The Life Series spotlights a typical day for various Rulesware team members

Carlos Pomar has been working in his role as a Project Manager at Rulesware since September of 2019. Before coming on board, he worked at Hewlett Packard and IBM, both in Project Management roles. We chatted with Carlos about how he chose to work in this field and what a typical day in his work life at Rulesware is like.

RW: Carlos you have been a Project Manager for many years now. What made you decide on this career?

CP: Actually, I feel like I stumbled into this role in a way – when I was younger I didn’t even realize it was an option. I have a degree in Marketing and a degree in Psychology. After college, I was pulled into work with various IT companies and found I really liked that environment.

Eventually I started to work my way into leadership roles, and it was at that point that I knew what I wanted to do and where I wanted to focus my career.

I chose to be a Project Manager in the IT field because I really enjoy leading people, working on new and different projects and tackling a good challenge. (In project management, there are always those three ingredients!)

Thanks to my career, I’ve been lucky enough to meet people from all over the world. It’s been an amazing experience.

RW: Walk us through a typical work day for you, from the time you wake up until the time you’re done work?

CP: Well, the first thing I do when I wake up and take my two rescue pitbulls out for a walk. After that I get ready and go to pick up my kids, a 6-year-old girl and 9-year-old boy, to take them to school.  Then it’s time to go to the office. Once I arrive my habit is to put my lunch in the fridge and chat a bit with whoever is around—usually the cleaning lady Conny! We catch up on what she’s been up to and other topics.

Once I’m ready to get to work, I go to a conference room and start my work—most of the time there are a lot of meetings after lunch, so I try to get my ‘focus’ work done in the morning. At lunch I try to go to the gym, and if not I usually go for a quick workout after the end of the work day.

I also always try to take 5 to 10 minute breaks to go out the office and talk to people and clear my head throughout the day. After work, depending on the day, I take my daughter to dance lessons and my son to basketball or boxing lessons, and at night I take my dogs out for another walk.

Carlos’ rescue dogs are a big part of his life

RW: What is your favorite part of the work you do?

CP: I would have to say that my favorite part is the interaction with people. I love being in a position to help people grow professionally. I also really enjoy the feeling I get when I’m thrown into new challenges and get to work on new exciting projects.

RW:  What is it like working  at Rulesware?

CP: Awesome. And the best part is the people and the culture, by far. They’re the main reason that I decided to come to Rulesware. The way that people interact—from CEO to apprentice—it’s amazing. This kind of environment is exactly what I was looking for when I decided to look for new job opportunities.

RW:  What are some perks of being a Project Manager that people may not realize?

CP: Well, what’s cool is that we are not only here to see that every task in the project gets completed on time, we are also here to lead our team and help them grow, and by doing that the right way we also grow and learn. Knowing how to lead your team is the most important part of this role and developing those skills pays off in all areas of your life.

RW: When you aren’t working, what are you up to?

CP: My life after work it is pretty much focused on my family, I love spending time with them—my kids are my world. I also like sports and doing physical activity to release stress and just disconnect from everything. Since I was a kid I’ve played American football, I was the quarterback, but I hurt my back so now I focus on basketball and go to the gym. I also really enjoy reading, I’m mostly into fantasy and science fiction, and I confess I also like to play video games. Really, I do a little bit of everything!

RW: Thanks for chatting with us Carlos – we are so happy to have you on board!
